Oirase Gorge (奥入瀬渓流, Oirase-keiryū) is a stunning highlight of Towada-Hachimantai National Park.
Situated on the border between Akita Prefecture and Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan, this picturesque gorge is the only stream flowing out of Lake Towada, a beautiful caldera lake formed by volcanic activity.
Stretching approximately 14 km from the lakeshore, Oirase Gorge offers a delightful escape into nature, showcasing the breathtaking scenery and vibrant landscapes that make this area special.

What To Expect at Oirase Gorge
As you stroll through the lush green tunnels and meandering paths sculpted by nature, you’ll breathe in the crisp, pristine forest air.
Sunlight dances upon the shimmering water surface, filtering through the canopy of leaves above, illuminating the vibrant stream and revealing the delicate beauty of moss-covered rocks along the way.

The gorge is covered by dense trees and is lined with azaleas and maples. Mossy rocks surround the area, creating a picturesque walking path rich in nature.
Along the way, there are many waterfalls and dynamic flows of water, along with various unique rocks that create a magnificent river landscape.
This place is famous among poets, artists, hikers and cyclists alike because the forest emanates soothing negative ions, and the scenery can make those who walk enter an almost meditative state.
Best Seasons to Visit Oirase Gorge

The best season to visit is from mid-May to mid-June when the fresh greenery is at its peak.
October, especially from mid to late, is also popular for its stunning autumn foliage. If you visit in the early morning, you might witness a fantastical scene where sunlight filters through the morning mist.

During winter months, the water freezes into stunning ice formations creating a particularly scenic view that attracts many visitors who enjoy nature and photography.

For those who enjoy photography, we recommend walking upstream from the lower reaches. Photos taken from below can capture the light beautifully.
Walking or cycling are equally recommended. If you choose to cycle, bike rentals are available near the Yakeyama, Ishigedo, and Kono Kuchi bus stations.

■ Rental Fees
Electric-assist bicycle: 1,000 yen for 4 hours
Regular bicycle: 700 yen for 4 hours
Additional Fees: 300 yen for each additional hour + 300 yen drop-off fee
